Ajmo na kavu (Let’s go for coffee)

Coffee is so important to Croatians and way of life, cafés are always filled with people no matter what time of day it is. People can sit on one coffee for hours. There are so many coffee places, it’s so easy to find a café to relax and enjoy the coffee and surroundings.
In Croatia, you meet someone on the street and you start chatting, 15 minutes passes and someone says Ajmo na kavu (Lets go for coffee), a friendly invitation to go for coffee.
Having a coffee is a way to relax, connect and chat about everything and anything. Friends, families, partners, workers, everyone meets for a coffee. Having a cup of coffee is enjoying life, having kava is essential part of life in Croatia and is a ritual that people do daily, its something you can never get bored of. You can sip your kava and “people watch” and enjoy the sunshine on a beautiful sunny day; never knowing who you might meet at a coffee.
Depending on how you like your kava, there’s the option of velika (big coffee) and mala (small coffee), if you don’t specify to the waiter it’s assumed it is a “velika”.
For example, when you order bijela kava, this is a big white coffee or cafe latté. Kava sa mljekom is big white coffee, which is a shot of coffee with milk. If you prefer a smaller cup of coffee, then you would order mala kava sa mljekom. Coffee in Croatia is always served with a glass of water.
