Obtaining your Croatian Residency

For people wanting to stay more then ninety days, you must apply for a long stay visa and a residence permit to stay in Croatia. These applications are handled via the local police station (MUP). To obtain a temporary residence permit you can obtain the application request from either by visiting Croatian police (MUP) or obtaining the application form online.

In obtaining your residency in Croatia depends if you are an existing EU resident or not.

  • An EU/EEA citizen: if you are a citizen of one of the EU/EEA countries, you can move freely in and out of Croatia. You are not required to obtain a Croatian visa.
  • A non-EU/EEA citizen: (third country nationals and everybody else) if your country of residence is not in the EU/EEA countries, you must apply for a long-stay visa and a residence permit to stay in Croatia.

Every non-EU resident or foreign national who wants to live and stay in Croatia for more then ninety days, must apply for a Croatian Residence Permit.

The EU countries are:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

The European Economic Area (EEA):

The EEA includes EU countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. It allows them to be part of the EU’s single market. Switzerland is not an EU or EEA member but is part of the single market. This means Swiss nationals have the same rights to live and work in Croatia.

Croatian Residence Permit   – stay more then ninety days

If you do decide you want to stay longer than ninety days in Croatia, you will need to apply for a temporary residency permit. You will need identity documentation and reason for wanting to live in Croatia.

You can obtain your Croatian residency first with the plan to obtain your Croatian citizenship at a later stage.

Temporary residency

A temporary residence permit is valid for one year and can be easily renewed and extended at the local police station. You must start the renewal process at least ninety days before your permit expires.

You will not be able to get permanent residency in Croatia until you have held a temporary residence permit for five years.

Long-term residence

You can apply for permanent residence after five years. You must reside in Croatia for five continuously years and are not absent from Croatia for more than ten months in total or once for more than six months.

Croatian people with foreign citizenship or without citizenship can get temporary residence if they belonging to the Croatian people.

Members of the Croatian people can apply for temporary residence or permanent residence in Croatia. You must get a certificate of belonging to Croatian people called Potvrda o pripadnosti hrvatskom narodu.

Croatian people with foreign citizenship or without citizenship can get temporary residence if they belong to the Croatian people. This involves obtaining some documents in Croatia. This state office is located in Croatia.
