What is burek and what is pita

Burek in Croatia

There is always controversy on what constitutes pita and what is burek. Both are flaky pastry made of thin, delicate dough like filo with a variety of fillings such as meat, cheese, spinach, or potatoes. Traditionally burek is made with meat while, pita can be done with cheese, spinach, potatoes, pumpkin, cherries or apple.

In Croatia, you can find burek and pita in bakeries and there are specific shops that make just burek and pita. They are around everywhere so please try it, you wont be disappointed. Burek or pita is a versatile food and can be enjoyed anytime of the day, it can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just as a snack. Croatians love to eat burek with yogurt.

You can now find burek with apple and even cabbage; it can be either sweet or savoury. There is a burek/pita to suit your taste.

The best burek or pita is made by the baka’s (grandmothers) and mums, who prepare and stretch and make their own pastry. Many of us have childhood memories of watching them prepare and stretch out the pastry with the wooden sticks or the thin pastry stretched all over the kitchen table. It is truly an art and takes a lot of skill and patience to make. The smell once cooking in the oven is amazing, and then when finally eating the crispy pastry with the filling is something to die for. Next time you see a burek or pita in a bakery or pita shop, try it you will want to come back for more, they are truly little pieces of beauty. Dobar tek. (Bon appétit) Enjoy! #LetsGo2Cro #IdemoUHR
