Ajmo na kavu (Let’s go for coffee)
In Croatia, coffee is about so much more than what’s in your cup. It’s part of the way of Croatian life. Cafés are filled with people at almost any time of day, and it’s not unusual to see someone sitting over a single coffee for hours, chatting with friends and enjoying the atmosphere. With cafés on so many streets and squares, there’s always somewhere to sit back, relax and enjoy your coffee and surroundings.

Having a kava is a chance to slow down, catch up on the latest news, talk about everything and nothing, and enjoy the company of others. Friends, families, couples and colleagues all meet over coffee. Sometimes you sit for hours chatting, with one topic leading to another and no real need to be anywhere else. It’s a daily ritual for many Croatians and a simple pleasure that never seems to get old.
And then there’s the pleasure of sitting outside on a sunny day, sipping your coffee and people-watching. You never know who might walk past, stop for a chat or join you at the table. There’s no need to rush. Sometimes, the best part of the day is simply enjoying the sunshine, the surroundings and the moment.
If you order a coffee in Croatia, you may hear velika (large) or mala (small) used to describe the size. If you have a particular preference, simply let the waiter know when you order.
So, if someone invites you for a kava, make some time in your day. You might be going out for coffee, but the real pleasure is often in the conversation, the company and taking a little time for yourself.
